Alpha subsidiary wins coal quality award

Dickenson-Russell Coal Company, a subsidiary of Appalachian coal producer Alpha Natural Resources, has won the Industry Leader award at the Coal Quality '05 conference in Huntington, West Virginia.

Staff Reporter

Dickenson-Russell operates the McClure River coal preparation plant in Cleveland, Virginia, supplying metallurgical coal to the steel industry.

Close to 90% of the coal processed by McClure River goes to coking plants that serve United States and foreign steel producers.

In 2004, all of the plant's 143 metallurgical rail shipments met or exceeded customer requirements for quality. McClure River has been ISO 9000-certified since early 1999.

McClure River has a raw feed capacity of 1100 tons per hour and plant availability has averaged more than 97% this year.

The quality system has not received a quality non-conformance notice in more than five years from the governing ISO 9000 registrar.

Alpha and its subsidiaries operate mining complexes in four states, consisting of more than 60 mines feeding 11 coal preparation and blending plants.
