China coal mine explosion kills 13

A GAS explosion at the Tianlong coal mine in China’s northeastern Heilongjiang province killed 13 miners on Saturday, after eight people were pulled out alive.

Staff Reporter

Investigations into the cause of the accident were continuing at the mine, which can produce some 90,000 tons of coal per annum, Xinhua reported.

Last year, nearly 6000 coal miners across China were killed in work-related accidents, according to official figures.

As China’s energy needs grow, collieries regularly flout safety rules in order to increase production and meet the booming coal demand.
