Sasol workers strike over pay increase

PRODUCTION at Sasol Mining's five coal operations in Mpumalanga, South Africa has dropped after about a third of workers at the mines downed tools on Friday in a bid for better wages.

Staff Reporter

Local news service IOL reports the workers - members of the United People's Union of SA - began a protected strike over wage increases on Friday and continued their action yesterday.

Sasol representatives told IOL the company is discussing the wage proposals with the union and that the mines were producing coal through the strike, although at smaller volumes.

The wage agreements in dispute have been accepted by other unions.
