Coal exploration plunges

EXPLORATION expenditure on coal declined 31% in 2016-17, to $120 million, reflecting significant uncertainties around future movements in coal prices, according to the Australian government’s latest Resources and Energy Quarterly.

Coal production is healthy. Sadly, coal exploration is not.

This compares with a rise in minerals exploration generally, which was up 10% in 2016-17 to $1.6 billion and driven mainly by nickel, cobalt, and gold.
