Rebuilding the Appin culture

SOUTH32 has made little secret that it wanted to reset the culture at its Appin mine in New South Wales in the wake of methane gas exceedance issues there. Chief sustainability officer Rowena Smith has shed some light on how the company did that.

The Appin operation has long been blighted by methane gas exceedances.

Indeed, one of those exceedances led to the 1979 disaster there that killed 14 people.
