THE mining industry has made a tentative return to productivity through increasing throughput and reducing headcounts. However, to sustain these increases will require mining operations to become more transparent, disciplined and nimble, according to a new report by McKinsey.

The productivity push has to be maintained.

The MineLens Productivity Index, McKinsey's proprietary indicator of the global mining sector's productivity, shows an increase of 2.8% a year in productivity performance for 2014 to 2016.
