Peabody's operating costs rising

PEABODY Energy’s seaborne met segment has reported March quarter costs of US$112.87 per short ton – an increase of 7% – primarily due to higher fuel prices and mine sequencing at the Coppabella Middlemount joint venture in Queensland.

Average Wilpinjong costs of $28.16 per ton were 19% higher than the prior quarter due to lower volumes and higher overburden removal costs.

Starting a longwall move at the Metropolitan mine in New South Wales also increased operating costs during the quarter.

The segment shipped 1.2Mt at an average realised price of $258.
