RIO Tinto will review its 79.36% interest in the underperforming New Zealand aluminium smelter at Tiwai Point in light of the challenging market conditions caused by low aluminium prices of about A$2524 per tonne and a supply glut.

The company has operated NZ's only aluminium smelter since 1971 in a joint venture with 20.64% Japanese partner Sumitomo Chemical Company.
