NSW Government releases proposed mining act

NSW MINISTER for Mineral Resources, Eddie Obeid said the community now has the opportunity to have its say about the proposed new Mine Health and Safety Act, which will replace the Mines Inspection Act.

“The Mines Inspection Act dates from 1901 – obviously we need our mine and quarry workers to be protected by modern laws, which give greater security to their families,” Obeid said.

The proposed new law follows the recent passing of new State health and safety legislation relating to the State’s coal mines and would replace a law that had been in place for over one century.

“The proposed MH&SA is the next step in the NSW Government’s $15 million commitment to protecting workers,” said Obeid.

“It would help better reflect the expectations our community has about protecting our workers because every death, every injury is one too many. Our mining industry is recognised world wide for its safety record but there is still a lot of room for improvement.”

Under the proposed new law there would be a greater emphasis on consultation with the workforce. It would also require a high standard of planning to reduce risks, particularly in underground mines and would require these mines to have emergency procedures as part of their management plans.
