The competition is co-sponsored by the West Virginia University Department of Mining Extension, the US Mine Safety and Health Administration’s local District 3 office, the state Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training and the National Mine Rescue Association’s Post 5.

“This event involves friendly competition designed to give teams a chance to demonstrate their skills,” said Mining Extension director Jim Dean.

“In actual mine accidents, of course, the teams are all about working together and support each other to help keep coal miners safe.”

Registered teams hail from West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania and will compete in bench, pre-shift and mine rescue.
