The 18-month, £3.5 million program is funded by the British Government and aims to reduce carbon emissions in China while strengthening links and knowledge sharing between European and Chinese experts.

Phase 1 of the project was launched this week intending to research possible locations for underground carbon storage; model China's future energy requirements; produce case studies of potential CCS technologies that could be applicable; and develop a scheme to tie in all the findings of the other studies.

Secondary stages will involve narrowing down options and defining details for a demonstration plant, and finally the construction of a demonstration plant that will utilise CCS technology and encourage its adoption.
