The company received this year's joint safety award for best safety record from the Harlan District office.

"I am proud that the employees at our Lone Mountain operations embrace safety as a core value," Tom Baumgarth, general manager of Lone Mountain, said.

"Safety is a guiding principle at all of Arch's operations. We want our employees to return home safe and healthy after every shift."

Lone Mountain's safety achievements also included the "Best Virginia Rescue Team" award from the 2001 National Mine Rescue, First Aid and Bench Contest held in Louisville, Kentucky.

Arch's Lone Mountain Processing subsidiary, located in Central Appalachia on the Kentucky/Virginia border, is expected to produce about 2.8 million tons of low-sulphur, high-quality coal this year.
