Subsidence management under spotlight

MANAGING subsidence will be the subject of a workshop being held February 12 at the University of Wollongong the day prior to COAL 2003 – 4th underground coal operators conference.

Staff Reporter

The workshop is timely, given that current proposals of the NSW Department of Mineral Resources require underground coal mines to have subsidence management plans. The workshop will explore some of the technical and communication issues that may be managed, with a particular focus on the management of the environmental impacts of subsidence.

Seven industry representatives will make brief presentations to set the stage. Speakers include:

Chris Harvey – What are the demands for subsidence management

Ross Seedsman – Layout options to reduce subsidence

Andrew Dawkins – Designing water monitoring programs

Gang Li – Applying risk management concepts to subsidence impacts

Jim Sandford – Issues in the Hunter Valley

Richard Walsh – Dendrobium and mining under rivers and streams

Paul Duncan – The Mandalong Experience

The workshop is being held in conjunction with COAL 2003 – 4th underground Coal operators conference.

The 2-day program covers the following subjects:

The nature of the longwall goaf

Behaviour of the immediate roof

The respirable atmosphere

Subsidence

Roof Support

Ventilation

Thick Seams
