The accident happened on September 23 on part of the mine’s access and haul road.

The victim was a passenger in a Ford utility travelling down an inclined portion of the road.

It appears the driver lost control of the utility, causing it to strike the road berm and roll over in the roadway.

According to the US Mine Safety and Health Administration this was the eighth fatality reported in 2016 in the coal mining industry and the third fatality classified as powered haulage.

As of this date in 2015 there were nine fatalities reported in the US coal mining industry and two of those were classified as powered haulage.
