Peabody took no chances at North Goonyella, which is one of the company's high performing mines.

A company spokesperson told Australia's Mining Monthly: "On Saturday September 1, Peabody identified abnormal gas readings via its gas monitoring system in a small area underground at our North Goonyella operation near Moranbah, Queensland.

"In line with appropriate protocols, the mine conducted an orderly withdrawal of underground employees while steps to return levels to normal are taken.

"Peabody is working with the Queensland Mines Inspectorate and other stakeholders to resolve the situation and safely resume operations in the near future."
