A MINE worker operating a continuous miner in at a New South Wales underground coal mine has managed to avoid serious injury after being struck in the head by a piece of coal.

After installing a roof bolt, the worker was walking along the side of the continuous miner when a bump was heard.
 
That bump was all the warning the worker got before a 2.3m x 0.8m x 0.
