North Goonyella to reventilate first segment

PEABODY Energy is proceeding with the ventilation of the first segment of its North Goonyella mine in consultation with the Queensland Mine Inspectorate as part of a phased reventilation and re-entry plan in the lead-up to expected longwall production in 2020.

The company has put in place safety protocols at North Goonyella in preparation of the re-entry following the fire there in September.

Production at the flagship mine has ceased since the spontaneous combustion incident occurred.

Peabody Energy CEO Glenn Kellow said the ventilation of the first segment marked an important first step in the next phase of activities aimed at resuming normal operations at the mine.

"As we move forward in the process, we appreciate the ongoing support of our many stakeholders including our employees, the union, customers, the inspectorate, neighbouring mines, the community of Moranbah and countless others," he said.
