JULY can be a particularly bad month for coal miners. Former Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union general secretary Andrew Vickers looks back at the historical tragedies that have made it such a sad month.

The first is Mount Kembla, on July 31 1902 in which 96 miners lost their lives in an explosion at Mt Kembla Colliery in New South Wales.

It is considered Australia's worst industrial disaster.
