Boart Longyear keeps LTI-free

DRILLING contractor Boart Longyear has not had one lost-time-injury in two years of work at the Northparkes copper and gold mine in New South Wales, an achievement the company has attributed to its “safety first” approach.

The approach revolves around a safety culture that aims to keep staff safe from injuries and illnesses and safeguard the environment from hazards.

“Safety is the most important aspect of a job site for Boart Longyear,” Boart’s territory manager for eastern Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific, Harry Mostert, said.

“Our safety culture is about accepting a personal and shared responsibility for ourselves, our fellow employees, our contractors, our customers and our shareholders to proactively work on improving safety on site.

“We are extremely proud of what our team at Northparkes has accomplished.”

In addition to celebrating its safety performance, the Boart Longyear crew won the site’s Zero Harm award for workplace improvements, including elevated platforms on diamond drill rigs, water control systems and above-ground sumps for both reverse circulation and diamond drilling.

Northparkes is a joint venture between China Molybdenum (80%) and the Sumitomo Groups (20%) and is located about 360km west of Sydney. Mining has been taking place since 1994, with extensions taking the mine’s life until 2032.
