Diesel-powered equipment is used extensively underground in Australia despite the health risks, with nDPM exposure known to cause carcinogenic effects.

The study was conducted by ChemCentre, Curtin University's WA School of Mines and School of Public Health, BBE Consulting Australasia and the Queensland University of Technology.
