Queensland passes mining industrial manslaughter laws

QUEENSLAND parliament has passed laws that make industrial manslaughter an offence in mines and quarries, meaning executives could face up to 20 years jail if a mine or quarry worker dies in the state because of their criminal negligence.

Manslaughter has become part of the Queensland mine safety legal framework.

The laws also require people in critical statutory safety roles in coal mines to be mine operator employees, not contract workers.
