THE Queensland government is offering a $5 million medical research grant over four years from 2021 to 2023 as part of its response to helping workers with occupational dust lung disease, particularly those with coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, commonly known as black lung.

It will also seek to determine the efficacy and sensitivity of methods for early diagnosis.

The grant is to specifically support research into the pathogenesis of silicosis and coal workers' pneumoconiosis as well as identifying factors to determine disease severity and risk of disease
