Blackwater, Daunia staff fear losing entitlements in Whitehaven deal

THE shift away from award to individual contracts at the Daunia and Blackwater mines once Whitehaven Coal’s US$4.1 billion acquisition from BHP-Mitsubishi Alliance completes will strip staff mine workers of hundreds of thousands of dollars in accrued entitlements, typically paid out at retirement or in the case of redundancy, the staff union warns.

Whitehaven said it stood by its commitment that every transferring employee would be offered employment on the same terms.

Collieries' Staff and Officials Association Queensland organiser Zac Gallagher said workers had been blindsided by the changes to their conditions and entitlements during the sale process.
