AUTOMATION is not some kind of magical silver bullet approach that can solve all of mining’s problems; it is more a holistic approach that needs to focus more on changing the behaviour of the people actually using the technology.

Automation is no magic bullet for miners.

That is what Roy Hill general manager Christine Eriksen told a recent mining conference.

She said while technology was seen sometimes as a magic tool, it often ended up causing more problems especially when more time was spent on the technology and not on fixing the process or developing the workforce.

Eriksen said after realising a silver bullet approach based solely on technology was not going to work, Roy Hill moved to a system thinking approach that gave workers the ability to change for the technology, not the other way round.
