The first F100 aircraft has taken off from the Busselton-Margaret River regional airport.

City of Busselton mayor Grant Henley said the city welcomed the support of the resources sector for residents.

"Fly in, fly out operations continue to bring essential revenue into the airport during COVID times, supporting both the local and state economy and ensuring jobs for South West people," he said.

The new FIFO flight service will link FMG's 460 residents in WA's South West, its second largest regional hub, to operations in the Pilbara where more than 600 workers are based.

FMG Eliwana general manager Katie Charuga-Andrijasevic said the safety and wellbeing of the FMG family was the company's highest priority.

"The introduction of this new service will assist our team members and contractors with managing their fatigue by reducing the need for travel between Perth and the South West region," she said.

FMG CEO Elizabeth Gaines said extending the flight network to Busselton would provide regional FIFO workforces living in the South West region with more flexibility and family-friendly options.

"We are confident this service will provide significant economic benefits and offer new job opportunities for people living in Busselton and surrounding towns," Gaines said.
