Data: Coal Services

(a) Two mines closed in 2001, with longwall production finishing at Cordeaux in March 2001 and Teralba in May 2001. As no new mines were commissioned during the year, the total number of longwall mines in operation in Australia at the end of 2001 fell to 32.

(b) Since the end of 2001, two further mines, Alliance and Bellambi West have closed down, leaving the Australian longwall mine population currently at 30, 10 in Queensland and 20 in NSW.

(c) Five more longwall mines are expected to close before the end of 2002: Wambo, Moonee, Kenmare, Tower and Wyee. With regard to new longwall mines, Glennies Creek is expected to commence longwall operations in mid 2002, United is installing the longwall from Teralba and it is possible the Goonyella punch longwall may start near the end of 2002 using the Kenmare longwall. This would leave only 28 longwall in operation at the end of 2002.

Note: For 2001 coal production and development data for these mines see published table.
