The From Mines to Minds initiative is a proposal to establish a Queensland education trust using 50% of future LNG royalties projected at more than $1.8 billion in the next ten years.
Premier Anna Bligh said the QET would be an important tool in building a bright future for the state.
“We can harness the energy of the decade of prosperity we see before us to create a golden generation that will secure Queensland’s bright future for a century and more,” she said.
Bligh said Queensland was already on the cusp of enormous prosperity, with a resources boom not seen before and the best way to use the prosperity was to invest in Queensland’s younger generation.
“A Labor government will invest in Queensland’s children because we know they are the most precious resource we have,” Bligh said.
Under the trust account model, every Queensland child born on or after July 1, 2012, will receive a savings endowment at birth that can be accessed at age 18.
Bligh recently paid a visit to the state’s Minerals and Energy Academy at Toowoomba state high school, which opened in 2005 to combat a severe skills shortage in the minerals and energy sector.
“The Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy is a prime example of our commitment to working with the Queensland Resources Council and the resources sector to ensure our students have the skills and experience to drive Queensland's economy into the 21st century,” Bligh said.
The academy provides traineeships and courses to give students a head start in the workforce.
Bligh said her government was committed to forging strong partnerships with the resource sector to build Queensland’s future.
“This is the beginning of a golden era in Queensland and we will see massive prosperity in the coming decade,” she said.
