The $10,000 booty on offer for the photograph that best “captures the spirit of the mining industry” went to Claire McCamish, a graduate environmental advisor at LionOre’s Thunderbox gold mine in Western Australia.

Snowden executive general manager Phil Snowden said the response to the inaugural competition and the standard of entries had been excellent. More than 340 photos from Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, India, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Ghana, Indonesia, South Africa, England, Chile and the US were submitted.

Due to its success, the company now plans to run the competition on an annual basis. Entries for 2006 will be received from January 1 to June 30.

Organisers are hoping to see a better showing from the underground coal contingent for next year’s competition – so get snapping!
