The company said coal production in the October 2004 period improved compared with the same period in 2003 thanks to the reactivation of the Loveridge Mine in March and the addition of a second longwall system at McElroy in August. Improvements in production were recorded primarily at the Enlow Fork and Robinson Run mines.
Total production was 6.7 million tons for the month, with 5.4 million tons from Northern Appalachia mines, 1.2 million tons from Central Appalachia and 100,000 tons from other areas.
"October was the solid month we expected," Consol chief Brett Harvey said.
"Our mines produced more coal in October than in any other month this year and our gas segment continued to increase production volumes."
He noted that a strong October was critical to achieving company production targets for the current quarter. Harvey said that October is often the best production month of the fourth quarter because it has 31 days with no workdays lost due to holidays.
