The shipment of 35,000 tonnes of thermal coal last week was freighted on various trains for 575 kilometres along the Sena-Beira railroad, Vale said.

Mining activities began in May and the open cut operation is targeting annual production capacity of 11 million tonnes of metallurgical and thermal coal.

A workforce of more than 9000 has been involved in developing the project, which started up in 2008.

Vale said about 90% of the equipment operators were Mozambican workers, with training provided locally and in Brazil.
