The expansion will lift PWCS’s nominal capacity from 89Mt to 102Mt at the Newcastle port in New South Wales.
PWCS chairman Eileen Doyle said the move was consistent with the company’s policy of shoring up coal exporting stability and maintaining a commitment to the Hunter Valley coal throughput over the short-, medium- and long term.
To reach 120Mt throughput, PWCS will look at expanding on adjoining land to Kooragang Island, which is currently subject to a NSW government land allocation procedure.
PWCS and the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group have both been short-listed by the NSW Government as tenderers to develop new coal loading facilities on the island.
A final decision on the allocation of the 140-hectare site is expected in August.
