Recognised for leadership in mining safety, environmental stewardship, technical and financial innovation, Foundation received the award in its first year as a nominated company.

The 2005 award review panel included international energy experts, energy ministers, regulators, corporate leaders, leading legislators and academics, who chose winners in 16 categories.

The judges evaluated nominees in the coal category in the areas of advanced technologies, productivity, innovative market or technology strategy, shareholder value and commercial success.

Foundation president James F. Roberts said the award further validated the success of the company’s business strategy over the course of its first year as a public company.

Foundation owns 13 coal mines and related facilities in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois and Wyoming. The company employs about 2900 people and produces approximately 67 million tonnes annually of predominantly steam coal.
