Everything is awesome for Liebherr

SWISS equipment maker Liebherr has teamed with Danish toy producer the Lego Group to create a replica of the 800-tonne Liebherr R 9800 excavator, the largest Lego Technic set ever released.

The 4108-piece Lego Technic construction kit gives master builders a replica of Liebherr's R 9800 mining excavator, which is one of the heaviest machines in Liebherr's fleet.

Lego's model is replete with true-to-life features and functions including the Lego Technic Control+ App that puts the builder in complete control.

According to Lego Group marketing director Niels Henrik Horsted the first Technic kit to connect to a smart device gives fans a richer and more immersive Lego play and building experience, regardless of age.

Henrik Horsted said Lego wanted to give fans an even more authentic experience with LEGO Technic elements.

"This new way of controlling your Lego Technic set bridges the physical and digital world and gets you even closer to the real-life model replicas that you build," he said.

The Lego team was given unrestricted access to Liebherr's machine, which made all the difference, Liebherr-mining equipment Colmar SAS marketing manager Gregory Schuh believes.

For Schuh, being contacted by Lego Technic for a project such as this was a great honour.

"We experience the fascination for our huge machines and the sophisticated technology behind them, for example with visitors at our trade fairs," he said.

"We believe that the Lego team has done a great job in capturing this fascination and turning it into an impressive model that can ignite the joy for engineering."
