Mining women get Queen's birthday gongs

THREE female leaders from Australia's mining industry have been recognised for their contribution to the sector in this years Queen's Birthday 2018 honours list.

Erica Smyth, Donna Frater and Elizabeth Swain were recognised for their contribution to Australia's world-class mining industry and the inspiration they provide to others.

Smyth, who hails from Perth, was awarded the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award for Women in Resources from CMEWA and was also included in Women in Mining UK's 2013 list of 100 global inspirational women in mining.

She has worked as a director for the Deep Exploration Technologies CRC and Emeco and chairwoman of Toro Energy.

Frater, from Binnaway in New South Wales, is a previous member of the Minerals Council of Australia Workforce Standing Committee who also featured in Women in Mining UK's 100 global inspirational women in mining.

She has worked for BHP and Rio Tinto.

Swain, from Tasmania, was awarded for her significant service to the mining industry as a metallurgist and as a role model for female engineers.

She worked at Bell Bay Aluminium from 1969 to 2012, and retired as its longest serving employee.
