“A fire was reported on the surface belt line,” US Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman Amy Louviere said of the incident at the facility.

“The fire was noticed at 4.45pm and burned for about 10 minutes before being extinguished by the mine employees.”

The fire department was not called, but local media reported emergency crews remained at the site for about two hours.

“It was a very small fire on the belt that was put out in minutes,” Alliance public affairs vice-president Cason Carter told ILN, adding that there was no significant damage to the belt.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

The three-silo loadout has a 28,000 ton capacity.

The Tunnel Ridge longwall mine in Triadelphia, the only operation that feeds the loadout, began mining in 2010.

The longwall started production in May.
