A canch is a sloping slice removed from the roof of a mine roadway to adjust the gradient between nearby workings.

The NSW Resources Regulator said the thrown worker suffered two fractured vertebrae.

"Equipment operators must maintain situational awareness and drive to the conditions, including maintaining an appropriate speed, particularly when driving over uneven ground," it said.

"This incident underpins the importance of wearing seatbelts as a mitigating control. When roadway hazards exist, mine operators must demarcate, plan and repair the road to reduce the risk to workers."
