ABC News reported the new company, Newcastle Terminal Development Pty Ltd, was formed from representatives across the coal industry, including Tony Haraldson as chairman and the national secretary of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union John Maitland, as deputy chair.

The board will be made up of coal shippers, businesses and the community.

Haraldson told ABC News the new plan for a third coal loader had been developed over several years and its feasibility had been confirmed.

He said as the number of ships off the port increased, the Hunter region was in danger of losing more market share, and its reputation as a reliable coal supplier was being damaged, ABC News said.
