The second student from the US, University of Michigan environmental health and industrial hygiene student Jennifer Massie, will spend her summer holidays working at the Government’s Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (Simtars).
Queensland Mines Minister Geoff Wilson said the international interest in Queensland’s mine safety was a sign of the state’s leadership in the field.
“Queensland has one of the best mine safety records in the world and the best mine safety legislation in the country,” Wilson said.
“This placement strengthens Simtars’ links with the US and recognises the expertise of our scientists in Queensland.”
Massie will be working at Simtars’ Occupational Hygiene, Environment and Chemistry Centre and will be covering workplace health and safety, chemical and noise measurement.
She follows PhD student Jessica Patterson who has been researching changing human behaviour to prevent accidents in mining and quarrying since March.
