Rescue efforts at the illegal mine in Beijing's Fangshan District were called off on August 20, two days after the collapse, after it was considered too dangerous to continue and there had been no sign that the men had survived.

The China Daily said the men had been at the end of the tunnel and were not injured in the collapse.

They were trapped in an aerated pocket, survived by drinking each other's urine and dug themselves out of the mine, emerging through the mine's entrance.

Medical examinations showed the men had lost a lot of weight and damaged their kidneys from lack of food and water but were otherwise in a stable condition after their 130-hour ordeal, China Daily reported.
