The sessions under the theme “Safety and Health Interventions for Mining” will be held Tuesday, September 23 from 1pm to 4pm and again from 9am to 12pm on September 24 in meeting room N226 of the Las Vegas Convention Center, the expo’s host venue.

“[It will] cover 10 important topic areas where NIOSH has made significant progress toward the goal of a safer and healthier mining workplace,” said organisers, who noted that each presentation would be of 15–30 minutes duration.

“Attendees are encouraged to attend any or all of these talks to gain insight into the state of mining health and safety research related to the topics.”

The following presentations are included on NIOSH’s session itinerary:

Design Guidelines for Multiple-Seam Mining in the United States – Tom Barczak;

Design Guidelines for the Construction and Monitoring of Retention Bulkheads in Underground Coal Mines – Sam Harteis;

Control of Methane Emissions on Longwalls – Steve Schatzel;

Reducing Low Back Pain and Disability in Mining – Sean Gallagher;

Controlling Diesel Emissions in Mines – Steven Mischler;

Reducing Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Mines Using Engineering Controls and Worker Empowerment Tools – Rudy Matetic;

Toolbox Training for Sand and Gravel Mines – Pamela Drake;

HazCom Writer: Compliance Tool for 30CFR Part 47 – Mike Jenkins;

Tame the Flame: Informational and Educational Tools for Improving Cutting and Welding Safety in Underground Coal Mines – Jürgen Brune; and

NIOSH Training Products to Improve Mine Safety and Health – Bob Peters.

NIOSH researchers will also be available on the show floor at MINExpo in the grand lobby.

The sessions are free and open to all MINExpo registered attendees and do not require a separate pre-registration. For more information, contact David Caruso at dcaruso@cdc.gov.
