Extended power for inverters

DRIVE equipment and technology group SEW-Eurodrive has extended the power range of its MOVITRAC 0...

To be unveiled at National Manufacturing Week 2004, the enhanced series brings simple, compact and affordable drive control technology to more powerful general applications, particularly those found in materials handling, according to the supplier.

"Up until recently, operators of drive control systems in the 30-45kW power range would often opt for more complex application inverters, but they paid a price for that," said Frank Cerra, SEW-Eurodrive engineering manager. "For simple handling and processing applications, involving machines like conveyors, fans, pumps and mixers, the upgraded MOVITRAC 07 offers a far more cost-effective alternative."

The 4 kW MOVITRAC 07 is designed for a supply voltage of 380-500Vac, and features simple drive electronics.

With the SEW-Eurodrive MOVITOOLS PC software, the frequency inverter's parameters may be set, status messages analysed, and the performance of the drive subjected to high-level diagnostics.

Using powerful voltage mode flux control (VFC) technology, the MOVITRAC 07 is able to precisely and dynamically control asynchronous AC motors, according to SEW-Eurodrive.

It also comes equipped with high overload capacity, integrated protection and monitoring functions, extended temperature range and integrated evaluation unit for optimum motor protection.

SEW-Eurodrive said the MOVITRAC 07 was a "four quadrant" inverter, hence it was able to control both torque and speed in two directions. According to Cerra, this means the inverter can perform full regeneration, and thus decelerate or 'brake' a load, making it highly applicable to hoisting and travelling operations.

"This is not a feature that is usually available in low-cost drives," he said.

The 45kW and other MOVITRAC 07 inverters will be on display in June at the SEW-Eurodrive stand at the National Manufacturing Week exhibition at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.
