The council will spend $A110,000 on mining engineers, hydrogeologists, mining environmental management, and mining planning control and management experts to prepare an environmental assessment.
Kores is yet to lodge a formal application with the New South Wales Government, but is expected to later this month.
The council has already identified 14 environmental issues that would be raised with the Planning Department. Its greatest opposition to the mine lies in the safety of its major water catchment area.
The proposed mine has already come under fire by protestors who have erected hundreds of signs in the central coast area with slogans such as "No Coal Save Your Water Catchment" and "Water Not Coal".
The campaign has been spearheaded by the Australian Gas Alliance, which successfully stopped coal seam gas mining in the region's water catchment in 2005.
