Six coal mines in England, Wales and Scotland are set to receive the Government aid following European Commission approval.
Brian Wilson, Minister for Energy, said: "This takes the total amount of aid approved under the UK Coal Operating Aid Scheme to more than GBP150 million. Britain's coal industry will continue to play a major part in meeting UK's energy needs in the future."
Betws in south Wales will get BGP1.2 million and an open-cast mine run by Celtic Energy will get GBP3.1million. Nant-Hir in south Wales will also get BGP 44,000. Two of the other pits are in Yorkshire and the third is in Scotland.
The aid is designed to allow UK coal mines with a viable future without aid to overcome short term market problems, caused in particular by low world coal prices and the lifting of the stricter gas consents policy on the building of gas-fuelled power stations in the UK.
