In his resignation letter to president George Bush, Abraham touted the department of Energy’s significant success toward reducing America’s dependence on foreign sources of energy, improving the environment and further securing the homeland through efforts to reduce nuclear proliferation.

National Mining Association president Jack Gerard said the industry was appreciative of Abraham's accomplishments, particularly for his steadfast support for clean coal technologies.

"U.S. coal producers greatly appreciate Secretary Abraham's strong and consistent advocacy for clean coal technology as the key to unlocking America's potential for greater energy independence," Gerard said.

"At a time of international instability, Secretary Abraham understood better than most the crucial role of technology in helping to meet the environmental challenges for our nation's most abundant and affordable energy source."
