US coal production drops 10%

US DEPARTMENT of Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that US coal production in February 2003 totaled 81 million short tons, 10% lower than in February 2002.

Coal consumed by the electric power sector in December 2002 was estimated as 92 million short tons, 13% higher than the level in December 2001.

 

Electric power sector coal stocks were estimated as 143 million short tons at the end of December 2002, 11% higher than the level a year earlier.

 

Coal exports in December 2002 totaled 3 million short tons, 17% lower than exports in December 2001. Coal imports in December 2002 totaled 2 million short tons, 20% lower than imports in December 2001.
