The mine is one of the safest in the nation, state inspector Rebecca Boam told Associated Press following her five-hour investigation of the facility.

San Juan’s inspection was part of an order by state Governor Bill Richardson that all underground mines be inspected following the Sago mine disaster in West Virginia that killed 12 on January 2.

The mine is operated by Australian producer BHP Billiton.
