Bowen began drilling earlier this month at its South Blackwater project and expects a second dill rig to begin at the site next month.
Following the initial drilling cycle, one of the rigs will be relocated to its West Rolleston or East Middlemount project in June.
The company has applied for a new exploration permit at Glen Idle to "consolidate" its position south of South Blackwater.
The Queensland Department of Mines and Energy has awarded Bowen with five new exploration licences, including Cooyar in Queensland's Tarong Basin where Bowen expects to find domestic and perhaps export quality thermal coal.
