The explosion occurred at 2.17am on Sunday morning when 436 miners were underground at Shanxi Coking Coal Group’s Tunlan coal mine, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency.

Xinhua last reported that three more bodies were pulled from the mine, while rescue efforts now focused on one remaining trapped miner who is believed to have a slim chance of survival.

The Associated Press reported Xinhua as saying it was China’s worst industrial accident in a year.
