The manufacturer, Desert Wolf, says the product will help “prevent another Marikana”— in reference to a strike in 2012, in which 34 miners were killed during a clash with police.

The Skunk Riot Control Copter has been condemned by labour activists as “absolutely outrageous” but Desert Wolf says the $A50,000 drones are “designed to control unruly crowds without endangering the lives of the protesters or security staff.”

Desert Wolf’s managing director has confirmed that an international mining house has ordered 25 of the drones, but refused to disclose the name of the company or from where it operates.
