The strike action was called by the United Mine Workers of America’s Local 7292.
Teck did not make available how many workers were involved in the strike, but did confirm that the mine’s previous labor agreement had expired on the last day of 2009.
The strike notice was served by the union on August 4.
The UMWA did not release public comment on the move before press time, and an ILN request for comment was not immediately returned.
Coal Mountain, a surface operation, produced both metallurgical and thermal coal from a 3,836-acre site near Sparwood.
Current annual production capacities of the operation and prep facility are 2.7 and 3.5 million tons respectively.
According to the company, the complex is projected to mine for another nine years at its current rates.
